Vehicle Queuing Studies

Vehicle queuing studies are often necessary to understand the dynamic impact between two (or more) sensitive locations through either queue discharge effects downstream or queue length spillback upstream. A queue study is used, in conjunction, with operational delay and volume to capacity studies to evaluate the effects of traffic signal installation, signal timing adjustments, and/or geometric considerations during intersection / site access design. On-site, they can aid in the identification (and mitigation) of problem areas caused by poor absorption of vehicles, control gate locations / operations, and parking layouts. Assessing the queuing impacts of Drive-thru windows (most notably for restaurants, but also increasingly banks and retail pharmacies) is a critical component to the development approvals process.
