Traffic Calming Strategies and Design
The primary goal of Traffic Calming is to mitigate the impacts (volume and/or speed) of traffic through sensitive areas such as high pedestrian zones and/or areas where road capacity or design is insufficient for the demands (and where other more appropriate routes are available). The main objectives are to reduce volumes on local residential streets, minimize vehicle speeds and address “cut through” traffic issues, while balancing the equally important need for vehicle connectivity, network efficiency, and emergency service. Traffic calming solutions need to be developed with high community involvement and be based on sound and proven design and management strategies. Among the many measures typically employed are roundabouts, traffic circles, speed humps, chokers, curb extensions, and signage, but can also include more drastic measures such as street closures and access restrictions.
