Signal Progression Studies

Signal progression studies are often employed in corridor studies where optimized signal progression timing plans have been implemented. As opposed to the traditional approach of isolated signal operations assessment, the progression study incorporates actual in-field signal timing plans in order to estimate operations based on progressed traffic flow (i.e. vehicles arriving at the intersection in platoons). The goal of the progression study is either to provide an optimized signal timing plan, which maximizes arterial two-way bands (thus maximizing the vehicles arriving on the green interval) or to provide more realistic traffic operations as part of a corridor study. Progression studies are most often conducted using the Synchro 7 software package.
