Multi-modal, Transit and Travel Demand Management Studies

Transtech has extensive experience in the assessment of the unique transportation system characteristics of GO Transit Stations, and in particular those with GO Train service. They are frequently related to the traffic generated by parking lot expansion plans, but must consider the impacts of future improvements in train scheduling and frequency on traffic peaking characteristics. As important inter-regional transportation hubs, GO Stations have facilities for parking, drop-off and pick-up (Kiss & Ride), other transit-authority linkages (regional and municipal), and pedestrian/cycling accessibility. The studies have to provide a comprehensive operational assessment of the interrelated transportation modes, both internally and on the adjacent external access road systems, for the short duration peaks in station activity related directly to train or bus arrivals and departures.

Transtech also has experience on the provision of transit service assessments for large-scale communities and developments in the GTA. These assessments generally involve strategic partners and provide clients with “on-the-ground” requirements for transit service capital as well as operating costs. They also have included comparison to historic levels-of-service and future implementation and phasing plans.

Encouraging and empowering more people to cycle is increasingly seen as an important part of a local (and indeed regional) transportation fabric and can alleviate congestion, improve air quality, and promote physical activity and wellness. Transtech has experience in detailed design of cycling routes and/or lanes that ensures that these facilities provide a high degree of safety, connectivity and comfort for cyclists without compromising the travel efficiency of other road users.

Travel Demand Management (or TDM) is the implementation of strategies and/or policies to reduce travel demand (primarily) made by single-occupancy private vehicles, and/or the redistribution of this demand to more sustainable modes. As Municipal and Regional governments are forced to deal with ever increasing congestion on finite transportation infrastructure, TDM studies are fast becoming a critical part of the approvals process. Transtech has been involved with the development and implementation of a variety of TDM studies, including ongoing monitoring of the effectiveness of TDM policies.
